Last weekend, police and soldiers dealt with 1,982 border crossers, and the number of people trying to enter Hungary illegally exceeded 5,000 for the whole week.
According to statistics on the police website, 725 foreigners illegally attempting to enter the country were arrested and escorted through the temporary security border on Friday, 695 on Saturday, and 559 on Sunday. In addition, three border crossers were apprehended inside the country.
In the past week, 5,185 border crossers were arrested and escorted back into the country, the highest number so far this year.
In the previous week, from August 29 to September 4, the total number of those apprehended was 4,807.
Smuggling of human beings is also becoming more common in Hungary, with 69 suspects prosecuted for the crime in the last week, according to police figures.
Traffickers have also been involved in a high number of car accidents this summer while transporting migrants, with several of these incidents resulting in deaths.
The pressure on the southern border is increasing, as police data shows. Moreover, it is not only the number of illegal immigrants that is a problem, but also their behavior, which has recently become increasingly violent towards the authorities.
It is not uncommon for migrants to have weapons, which they repeatedly use against each other as well. During the summer, there was a fatal shooting between Afghan and Pakistani migrants near the Serbian town of Subotica (Szabadka).
