The training of Hungarian specialists, who will train the operators of the Paks II Nuclear Power Plant on the full-scale simulator of the unit control room, has been completed at the training center of the new units of the Leningrad Nuclear Power Plant. The training took place at the Leningrad II Nuclear Power Plant in Russia, because the construction of the two units commissioned there in 2018 and 2021, is a reference project for the turnkey investment in Paks, Világgazdaság reports.

During the two-month theoretical and practical training courses that have been held regularly since 2022, the specialists practiced scenarios deviating from normal operating modes and teamwork in the control room.

The training was organized by the St. Petersburg branch of the Rosatom Technical Academy specifically for the Hungarian customer.

Vladislav Smolsky, the main contractor for the Paks II Nuclear Power Plant project and head of the training department at ASZE engineering company’s Paks branch, emphasized in a statement that Rosatom is fulfilling all of its obligations related to the Paks II Nuclear Power Plant project.

Krisztián Szarvas, deputy CEO of Paks II. Zrt., said it was crucial to have the necessary number of well-trained personnel available for the commissioning of the new units.

His colleagues are now acquiring the experience that they will then pass on within the company for decades to come, thereby increasing the recognition of the domestic nuclear profession,

he noted.

Rosatom is open to international cooperation, offering turnkey nuclear power plant projects, including small modular reactors (SMRs), the supply of nuclear fuel for nuclear power plants, the training of operating and maintenance personnel, operational support, maintenance, and the continuous modernization of nuclear power plants, reads the statement.

Fact

The Paks II Nuclear Power Plant will be the first modern, Russian-designed nuclear power plant equipped with VVER-1200 Generation III+ reactors in the European Union. Its construction is governed by the Russian-Hungarian intergovernmental agreement of January 14, 2014, and the so-called EPC contract for the design, procurement, and construction of the facility.

The National Atomic Energy Agency issued the construction license in August 2022. The granting of the permit confirmed that the project complies with both Hungarian and European safety standards. There are currently four units equipped with VVER-1200 reactors in operation in Russia and two similar units in Belarus.
