Strategic cooperation is being launched between Hungary and Vietnam in the nuclear industry. Hungary is expected to play a significant role in the development of the Southeast Asian country’s nuclear industry in the fields of technology and training, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó announced in Hanoi on Wednesday.
After his meeting with his Vietnamese counterpart Bùi Thanh Sơn, Mr. Szijjártó pointed out that a large number of future Vietnamese nuclear engineers have already studied in Hungary. This program will be expanded, and hundreds of future nuclear specialists will come to Hungary for training and education.
The Foreign Minister stressed that Vietnam has recently experienced very impressive economic development, with growth rates often in double figures and 30 million new jobs created in just ten years. “And the smooth political relations between the two countries also provide an opportunity for Hungarian companies and the Hungarian economy to play their part in the success of the Vietnamese economy,” he emphasized.
He welcomed the fact
that bilateral trade has grown greatly in recent months, with the volume of trade increasing by 17 percent last year and by a further 66 percent in January this year, so that the total value could realistically exceed one billion dollars by the end of the year.
He said that this is largely due to the important role of electronics shipments from Vietnam to Hungary, which are very important for the Vietnamese economy, while Hungarian companies have also achieved significant success in the Vietnamese market, including in the health, food, and defense sectors.
Péter Szijjártó cited the delivery of twelve aircraft to the Vietnamese Air Force by a Hungarian-owned manufacturer, but also the emergence of Richter and Egis as major players in the country’s pharmaceutical industry, as well as the boost given to exports of Hungarian baby chickens, wine, and medical instruments.
The minister announced that Hungary would open a consular representation in Haiphong, Vietnam’s most dynamic development area and the largest port city, to maximize the country’s economic development. “To build a successful, mutually beneficial relationship between two countries, you need to be there in person. That is why we have opened our consulate in Ho Chi Minh City. It is also the reason why we decided to establish a consular mission in Haiphong,” he emphasized.
He stressed that Haiphong will become the most important port not only for Vietnam, but for the whole Southeast Asian region in the future. He said the transport route from Haiphong is becoming increasingly important and Hungarian presence there will help companies benefit from the very rapid growth of the region’s economy.
