Norwegian Man Planning Breivik Copy-Cat Attack Captured in Budapest

Hungary Today 2023.06.21.

A Norwegian man living in Budapest, who has already been convicted of violent and sexual offenses in his home country, was planning to outdo his compatriot, mass murderer Anders Behring Breivik. He uploaded videos online in which he talked about the destruction of Hungary and attacks at several locations. The Counter Terrorism Center eventually arrested the man, Police.hu reported.

The National Bureau of Investigation of the Emergency Police Unit was informed by the Counter Terrorism Center that a Norwegian man living in Budapest had recently posted several videos on a video-sharing portal in which he planned to kill people. Following the report, the police immediately started to analyze the videos, identify the man, and obtain all information related to his planned act.

The videos posted by the 45-year-old Norwegian said that he wanted to surpass the 77 deaths in 2011 by Anders Breivik, a Norwegian mass murderer. He uttered phrases in the videos such as “I will take everything that matters, everything that is valuable, I will destroy the country. Just listen! ….  I can attack anywhere. …. Planes, airports, train stations, nothing is a problem for me. …. I will destroy the innocent.”

Fact

Anders Behring Breivik committed his terrorist attack on July 22, 2011. He had first detonated a car bomb in Oslo, killing eight people and injuring dozens more, including twelve severely. The bomb exploded near government buildings. Two hours later, the bomber, wearing a police uniform, sailed to Utøya Island, where he began indiscriminately shooting campers, mostly teenagers, from the Labour Party’s youth organization. He immediately surrendered to the police. He later said he never thought he would survive the day. He called his action “ruthless but necessary.” ˙

Based on the information obtained, it was necessary to apprehend the man as soon as possible, and within a few hours of the signal, a coordinated operation was carried out by the Counter Terrorism Center, given the seriousness of the crime and the man’s criminal record.

The criminal was eventually arrested in his Budapest apartment on June 14, 2023. The police searched the apartment and confiscated all computer equipment.

Investigators questioned the man as a suspect for the crime of threatening to commit a terrorist act, and then took him into criminal custody and initiated his arrest. On Saturday, the court arrested the man and ordered him to serve his sentence in the Judicial Observation and Psychiatric Institute.
