Astrophysicist Adam Riess, one of the winners of the 2011 Nobel Prize in physics, will give a lecture on ‘The Surprising Expansion History of the Universe’ at an International Symposium of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences on Wednesday.

The conference will explore the role of astronomical distance measurement techniques, including pulsating variable stars and supernovae, as well as other current cosmological problems.

Adam Riess’s lecture will be held in English, and is open to the public free of charge, but registration is required and can be done via the MTA website. The event will also be available online, and will be followed by a YouTube channel with Hungarian subtitles.

In his presentation, the scientist will explain how his research team discovered the accelerating expansion of the universe and why understanding the nature of dark energy is one of the greatest unsolved mysteries in astrophysics and cosmology. Riess will also discuss how recent research shows that the universe continues to resist all our attempts to understand how it works.
