No More Free Riding, New Buses Are Coming

Hungary Today 2025.02.25.

Production of the new Mercedes BKV (Budapest City Transport) buses is soon beginning. The buses are an important stage in the transport company’s vehicle replacement program. They will also be equipped with a passenger counting system to prevent free riding.

The 65 new buses arriving in the BKV fleet will be equipped with modern tech, an ergonomic passenger compartment, on-board cameras and a modern passenger information system that also shows transfer connections. Passengers will also benefit from the USB charging devices located at every seat. The low-rise buses are air-conditioned and the lighting is provided by energy-saving LEDs. Thanks to the modern, 7.7-liter engine, their average consumption and therefore their environmental impact are low.

The entry into service of the arriving vehicles is a significant milestone in Budapest’s fleet rejuvenation program. With this new vehicle replacement,

approximately 8% of the bus fleet will be modernized with models that meet current expectations aesthetically, technically and in terms of passenger comfort,

said Tibor Bolla, CEO of BKV.

The detailed tender for new vehicles usually contains the most precise technical specifications possible, but before production can begin, certain issues need to be agreed with the contractor so that the new members of the fleet are perfectly aligned with the needs of Budapest’s passengers and the public transport system. During the visit to Mannheim, BKV and Mercedes-Benz specialists clarified several design and functionality-related details. Among other things,

they determined the number and location of handrails, ticket machines and landing indicators, the exact operating principle and role of the switches on the driver’s cab dashboard, as well as the color and finish of smaller body and trim elements.

The arrival of the new Mercedes-Benz Citaro K also paves the way for the spread of assisted vehicle systems in BKV. Thanks to this, safety is increased not only by cameras monitoring the passenger compartment and traffic, but also by systems that monitor blind spots, tire pressure, driver alertness, sign recognition and pedestrian and cyclist warning. They will also be equipped with a passenger counting system preventing free riding. Special attention is also being paid to the cybersecurity of vehicles equipped with IT devices.

Fact

Not only city transport, but long haul transport companies have also been actively modernizing their fleet, with nearly 40% of their buses replaced in the past six years. In December 2024 the first Hungarian electric bus has been unveiled. The Electronell 18, part of the Credobus Electronell family, is a lightweight and energy-efficient vehicle with a tare weight of 16 tons—lighter than comparable models from other manufacturers. This reduced weight enables a smaller battery pack, requiring 25% less energy and offering lower operational costs. Of the renewed fleet, 10% are alternative-powered vehicles, including 102 electric buses. It is predicted, that an additional 20 e-buses will join the fleet in 2025.
