Nicusor Dan has thanked the Hungarians of Transylvania for their votes in the final round of the Romanian presidential election held on Sunday. “Together we will succeed!” the newly elected Romanian president wrote in Hungarian in his Facebook post on Saturday.
“Thank you to the Hungarian community for showing that Romania is your country. Together we will succeed!” Nicusor Dan said. He stated that under his leadership, the country will continue on a democratic, pro-European and transatlantic path with faith for a better future.
There are no saviors—we will build the country we want together,”
he wrote. He promised to do everything in his power to honor the trust placed in him.
Dan expressed his special thanks to several social groups for their support in the decisive round. He thanked young voters, who he said understood that they have a voice, and promised to always listen to them.
He greeted women for “voting against violence,” the elderly for keeping the future of their children and grandchildren in mind, and men for understanding that actions, not words, are needed.
He expressed special thanks to religious minorities, “who have placed their faith in the service of the country’s prosperity,” and to the large number of Moldovan Romanians who supported him. In addition to the Hungarian minority, he also addressed the Roma community in their own language, writing, “There will be no discrimination, and we will prevail,” and thanked sexual minorities for their support.
He thanked journalists, election observers, and politicians who “put the country’s interests before party interests” for upholding democratic values.
He emphasized that the coming period will not be easy, there will be mistakes and obstacles, and he said that “35 years must be corrected,” which will require everyone’s efforts. “With patience, agreement, and hope, we will succeed,”
he concluded his post.
The independent mayor of Bucharest became Romania’s president with 53.6 percent of the vote, defeating his opponent, George Simion, President of the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR). Dan will be sworn into office on Monday.
