New Train Line to Bring Transcarpathia Closer to Budapest

Hungary Today 2025.04.11.

On Thursday, Levente Magyar, Parliamentary State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, announced a major step towards improving Hungary’s connections and infrastructure: new rail links with Ukraine will be established soon.

“We are rebuilding strategic rail links,” the politician revealed on his social media page. The decision will affect several cities in Transcarpathia (Ukraine)

and will provide a “convenient, fast, direct” solution, bringing “Transcarpathia closer to Budapest than ever before.”

The existing Chop (Csap)-Záhony link, he said, “connects not only Ukraine with Hungary, but the whole of Eastern Europe with Central and Western Europe, hence its further development is a priority of Hungarian economic interest.” Mentioning other international connections recently completed, he noted that the Budapest-Munich rail link was launched several years ago, while the Budapest-Kyiv direct line has been in operation since the end of last year. The State Secretary announced two new planned destinations:

  • Uzhhorod (Ungvár) and
  • Berehove (Beregszász).

Levente Magyar thanked the Ukrainian partners, who recognized the importance of developing transport links, for their effective cooperation.

Between Ukraine and Hungary, continuous efforts are being made not only to improve the railways, but also the road interconnections to ease the situation of motorists and thus improve border crossings. As recently reported in Hungary Today, a new border crossing has recently opened in Nagypalád (Velyka Palad) in Transcarpathia and Nagyhódos, Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County (eastern Hungary). The announcement was also made by Magyar, who pointed out that since 2010, Hungary has opened 45 new border crossings in addition to the 83 existing ones, thus increasing the number of physical connections between Hungary and its neighbors one and a half times.
