The contract for the development of the new Combined Cycle Gas Turbine unit of the Mátra Power Plant has been signed. This means that the detailed design of the large power plant using innovative technologies and the preparation of construction works in Visonta (a village east of Budapest) can begin.
The contract was signed by representatives of MVM Mátra Energy Zrt. On behalf of the three-member consortium that had previously won the tender for the construction of the new power plant and the long-term maintenance of the gas turbine, the document was certified by the heads of Status KPRIA Zrt., a company owned by the Mészáros Group, West Hungária Bau Kft. that is also 100 percent Hungarian-owned and part of the WHB Group, and Elsewedy Power System Projects, part of Elsewedy Electric, one of Egypt’s leading industrial and energy companies.
Energy Minister Csaba Lantos stressed that the Hungarian state supports the historic developments in the domestic energy sector and is committed to green and sustainable solutions. He said that the conclusion of the contract was extremely good news, as it had been around a decade and a half since the last base-load power plant was put into operation in Hungary.
The construction of the new power plant is a crucial step for Hungary’s energy policy, as it will contribute to strengthening Hungary’s energy independence, enhancing its security of supply, and achieving its climate objectives. The new plant will also play an important role in balancing renewable electricity production and thus in achieving a successful energy transition,
said Minister Lantos.
The large-scale development will contribute to making Hungary’s energy supply even more secure, more predictable, and as environmentally efficient as possible. The new power plant will use state-of-the-art high-efficiency technologies, and will also be able to use green hydrogen, a carbon dioxide-free fuel, on a large scale. This is a great professional achievement, as this innovative solution will be applied here for the first time in Hungary,” said Lőrinc Mészáros, owner of the Mészáros Group.

MVM Group CEO Károly Mátrai explained that the new Visonta gas turbine power plant will contribute to the growth of weather-dependent renewable electricity generation as part of the MVM Group’s 2035 strategy. Its system control capability will enable it to contribute to the stable maintenance of domestic electricity production by replacing the capacity of lignite-fired units.
This development will ensure the continuity of the Mátra Power Plant’s operations, which is of key importance for local employment and the economy.
According to preliminary surveys, the vast majority of residents in the surrounding settlements support the investment, which will strengthen the social acceptance of the project and contribute to the sustainable development of the region,
said the CEO.
Elsewedy Electric’s CEO Ahmed Elsewedy explained that they pride themselves on their role as a provider of integrated infrastructure solutions, specializing in fast-track, turnkey projects that help power industries and nations. This is the company’s first project in Hungary. The country excels in Europe’s energy palette, which is why they want to play an active role in developing its infrastructure for many years to come.
