New Metro Line a Priority Investment Project in Budapest

Barbara Bene 2022.08.17.

Government developments will make it increasingly worthwhile to opt for the local rail service (HÉV), which will provide easy access from suburban agglomerations to Budapest, and soon all the way to the city center.

Government decrees have finalized the routes of several HÉVs and the Hungarian government is speeding up the development of metro line 5.

Many people living in suburban agglomerations use the HÉV on a daily basis as a fast transport solution due to its fixed route.

The project to develop the metro lines has been declared a priority project for the national economy, and the identified land will be protected for two years.

In the meantime, the development of the Budapest metro line 5, which will serve as an extension of the H6 and H7 HÉV-lines, is underway. These two lines currently terminate well outside the city center. However, the lines will be completely renovated and extended to Kálvin tér, so that passengers can reach the city center without having to change trains.

The contractor of the new metro, FŐMTERV Zrt., has created a phone app that allows anyone to take a look at the M5 metro, the test drilling of which started last year.

“It is a perennial difficulty for us to present the future installation in a credible way to the public, who cannot read the technical plans, and we are asking for their opinions. The visual plans help us a lot, but the reality will always be a little different,” said Tibor Keszthelyi, CEO of FŐMTERV Zrt.

The company hopes that the application will soon become popular.
