New Heat Record Broken: Hottest Temperature ever at Dawn in Budapest

Hungary Today 2024.08.26.

The Hungarian capital’s early morning heat record was broken on Saturday, HungaroMet said on its website. Even though we are approaching the end of August, the heatwave is still not letting up, and on Saturday, in some areas we could not even escape the heat at night: in Budapest, temperatures remained above 20 degrees Celsius even at dawn, writes Világgazdaság.

On Saturday morning, the air in the capital only cooled down to 23 degrees Celsius on János Hill (the highest point of Budapest with a height of 528m), breaking the record for the highest minimum temperature in the capital by 0.2 degrees Celsius for that day.

The previous record for this day was 22.8 degrees Celsius, set in 2023.

However, the extreme heat was not limited to the weekend: the Chief Medical Officer of Hungary has issued a second-degree heat alert for the whole country from Saturday August 24 until midnight on Friday August 30. Moreover, the National Public Health Center has warned people with chronic illnesses to be wary of overheating, which will be particularly difficult during the heatwave, which is expected to last for a week.

Daytime highs are predicted to be between 32 and 37 degrees Celsius, with the southern regions of the country being 1-2 degrees Celsius warmer. Extremely high UV radiation is expected everywhere between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Overnight temperatures are forecast to be around 20 degrees Celsius across most of the country.

UPDATE

After Saturday, the early morning heat record in the capital was also broken on Sunday. HungaroMet wrote on its website that on Sunday morning, 23.5 degrees Celsius were measured on János Hill, breaking the previous Budapest dawn temperature record for this day.
