New Drug Law Bans Traffickers from Municipalities Where They Sell Products

MTI-Hungary Today 2025.05.14.

The new drug law has been announced, as a result of which drug dealers will face confiscation of assets, expulsion, and prison, the government commissioner responsible for eradicating drug trafficking announced on his social media page.

László Horváth recalled that Prime Minister Viktor Orbán had ordered a “manhunt” against drug dealers on March 1, which was necessary, because the rapid spread of designer drugs poses a particular threat to young people and even children. He emphasized that drugs seriously damage health, can lead to death, cause a deterioration in public safety, accidents, and tragedies, and that the government has therefore declared zero tolerance for drugs, which is also part of the bill that has now been passed.

With this bill, we want to give the police quick and effective new tools in addition to deterrence. In addition, not only classic drugs and new psychoactive substances, but also other mind-altering substances will be classified as drugs, and trading in them will be subject to severe penalties,”

said Horváth.

He explained that drug dealers should also expect to have all their assets confiscated and that they will lose the real estate, vehicles, equipment, production lines, and other infrastructure used for drug trafficking. In addition, traffickers may be banned for up to five years from the municipalities and regions where they traffic drugs.

Mr. Horváth emphasized that there will be no mercy for repeat drug dealers: anyone found guilty of a drug offense for a second time will not be eligible for parole; until now, this only applied to violent repeat offenders. He went on to say that

shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues where drug-related crimes have been committed twice within a year will be closed down.

The police can take anyone found in a public place under the influence of drugs into custody for 72 hours, especially if they are intoxicated or aggressive and pose a danger to others, he added. Only those who assist the police in their work and reveal the dealer from whom they obtained the drugs can participate in the diversion program, which can be used a maximum of two times; on the third occasion, criminal liability cannot be avoided, the government commissioner highlighted.

He also said that in cases of drug use involving minors, doctors will be required to notify the parents or legal guardians. If someone commits murder, bodily harm, robbery, looting, or vandalism while under the influence of drugs, they will face more severe penalties.

Even selling small amounts of “party drugs” can result in up to two years in prison, but if someone is found with enough drugs to supply up to 10 people, their sentence can be up to three years.

“All this means that drug dealers, distributors, and users can expect strict and harsh measures. There is only one correct stance on drugs, and that is zero tolerance. The hunt continues, and drug dealers must disappear,” Horváth emphasized.
