New Consul General: Equal Support for Szekler and Moldovan Hungarians

MTI-Hungary Today 2024.08.28.

István Dolhai, Hungary’s new Consul General in Miercurea Ciuc (Csíkszereda, Romania), was introduced at a press conference on Tuesday.

Born in 1976, Consul Dolhai completed his education at the University of Nyíregyháza with degrees in history and computer science. Before his current role, he served as a consul in Cluj-Napoca (Kolozsvár) and has extensive experience in cultural and crisis management.

At the press conference, the diplomat outlined his plans for his new position, covering three counties in Szeklerland (Harghita, Covasna, and Mureș) and four in Moldova (Bacău, Neamț, Suceava, and Botoșani). He emphasized his commitment to addressing the needs of both Szekler and Moldovan Hungarians equally.

This is our job, this is why we are here. Besides taking care of citizens’ affairs and representing the Hungarian state, our main task is to support and help the Hungarian communities,” he stated.

Mr. Dolhai acknowledged the significant challenges of his new role, noting, “It would have been difficult to find a more difficult task,” and recognized the Consulate General in Ciuc as the largest Hungarian consulate globally. He also mentioned, “I consider it important to meet the leaders of the municipalities to identify existing problems and needs and to communicate them to Budapest.”

He sees his role as an opportunity to bring a fresh perspective, noting, I am the first Consul General in Miercurea Ciuc in 14 years who has no ties to Transylvania,” which he views as both advantageous and challenging.

István Dolhai plans to use his background in cultural management to engage with local communities and youth.

The new consul’s appointment signifies a strong commitment to supporting Hungarian communities in both Szeklerland and Moldova, focusing on addressing their needs and enhancing cultural connections.
