Since 2010, Hungary has opened 45 new border crossings in addition to the 83 existing ones, thus increasing the number of physical connections between Hungary and its neighbors by one and a half times, said the Parliamentary State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade on Tuesday at the opening of the new Hungarian-Ukrainian border crossing between Nagypalád (Velyka Palad) in Transcarpathia, Ukraine and Nagyhódos, Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County (eastern Hungary).
Levente Magyar emphasized that what Trianon treaty destroyed and cut off, they have been able to make up for to a large extent in recent years. He added that this also required the support of the people living in the region, who voiced the need to open the border crossing. It was thanks to the Ministry of Interior that the Nagyhódos pedestrian border crossing had been opened after more than ten years of stagnation, he stated.
The politician pointed out that
part of the Hungarian nation now lives in a country at war, which makes crossing the border extremely difficult, which is why the two sides of the border are now celebrating separately.
Levente Magyar stressed that many people had paid with their lives for the war in Ukraine and tens of thousands of people had been forced to leave their homeland. He said that this is why we must do everything we can for peace and to “alleviate the suffering of our Hungarian brothers and sisters on the other side.”
The State Secretary urged those present to visit the border if they have the opportunity. “Let human relations be restarted across the border, those relations that were cut off by the Trianon border,” he emphasized.
Speaking to the public media after the opening of the border crossing, Levente Magyar said that a centenary reunion had just been organized for the benefit of the border population. This is also important in Hungarian-Ukrainian relations, “which is now overshadowed by a series of issues on which we have not found common ground in recent years,” he added.
He highlighted that the new border crossing had been opened despite the fact that relations between the two countries were at a low point. This, he said, shows that the two governments are willing to cooperate on pragmatic issues.
On Tuesday, Levente Magyar inaugurated a modern kindergarten in Holmets (Korláthelmec), Transcarpathia, built with Hungarian support and the cooperation of the Hungarian Interchurch Aid, Kárpáti Igaz Szó reported. As the paper recalled, in recent years, Hungary has supported the construction and renovation of numerous new Hungarian kindergartens across Transcarpathia.
