New Agricultural Support to Boost Innovation and Rejuvenate the Sector

Hungary Today 2024.05.22.

The economic situation is difficult; therefore, Hungarian agriculture not only needs support, but also a vision for the future, said Agriculture Minister István Nagy. This is also the aim of the non-repayable grant provided under the Rural Development Program, Világgazdaság reports.

In order to improve agricultural training, the government will provide HUF 15.6 billion (EUR 40.5 million) in non-repayable grants to 19 institutions to set up demonstration farms under the Rural Development Program announced last year, István Nagy said, adding that innovation, preparing for climate change, and rejuvenating the sector are key issues.

19 agricultural institutions were eligible to apply for up to HUF 1 billion (2.6 million) in non-repayable grants to set up demonstration farms. The successful applicants received their certificates on Tuesday at the Ministry of Agriculture. The grant covers the purchase of machinery and equipment used in demonstration farms, infrastructure improvements, and the installation of renewable energy technologies. The value of agricultural aid payments rose to a new high of HUF 1,400 billion (EUR 3.6 billion) last year.

This is a huge help to farmers to stay afloat in the current difficult situation,”

said Nagy at the event.

The Agriculture Minister stressed that demonstration farms can also help farmers learn about innovative technologies, crops, environmental protection, forestry, animal welfare, animal health, farm management, organization, and marketing solutions.

This will help them optimize production, reduce pollutant emissions, and adapt effectively to the expected impacts of climate change.

The establishment of demonstration farms can also help to further increase the number of farmers under 40, but in parallel with the rejuvenation objectives, it is also important to increase the proportion of farmers with qualifications. “Sustainability, digitalization, and innovation are good ways of attracting young people or those working in other fields,” the Minister concluded.
