Nestlé is expanding its factory in Szerencs (northeastern Hungary) with a new solar park set to begin operations in March 2025.

The solar park, with an annual capacity of 1.5 gigawatts, represents an investment of over HUF 700M (EUR 1.75M), supported by the National Investment Promotion Agency (HIPA). Once operational, the solar system will cover 30% of the Szerencs plant’s electricity needs and nearly 21% of its total energy needs, benefiting up to 650-700 households annually.

This solar park is part of a broader investment effort by Nestlé Hungária Ltd., which has committed HUF 9B (EUR 22.5M) over recent years to modernize the 100-year-old factory.

This modernization has led to job creation, with the plant currently employing 500 workers and having an annual production capacity of 40,000 tons.

HIPA is contributing 45% of the investment, highlighting the Hungarian government’s commitment to promoting energy efficiency and renewable energy. Under the Factory Savings Program, the government has allocated HUF 150B (EUR 375M) for energy improvements in large companies.

Nestlé, a global leader with a 150-year history, operates three factories in Hungary, employing over 2,800 people.

Most of the company’s suppliers in Hungary are local businesses, generating HUF 54B (EUR 131.4M) annually in sales to Nestlé’s global network.

In 2023, Nestlé Hungária reported net sales of HUF 283.3B (HUF 689.8M), up from HUF 246.5B (EUR 600.2M) in 2021. The company also posted a profit of HUF 2.764B (EUR 6.7B) in 2023, reinforcing its strong financial performance and ongoing commitment to sustainable development in Hungary.
