The reconstruction of the interior of the Royal Hungarian Ministry of Finance is underway with the help of old photos and preserved fragments, according to a video posted by Finance Minister Mihály Varga on his social media page.
The project is saving one of the most important buildings of the Buda Castle from destruction, reports Magyar Nemzet.
In addition to the renovation of the facade and roof of the more than 100-year-old neo-Gothic building complex on Holy Trinity (Szentháromság) Square, the important aim of the project is the restoration of the representative interior spaces. Sculptors are working on the restoration of the building’s decorations, and all the finished samples are hand-made, as emphasized in the video.
The building was built from 1901 to 1904, according to the plans of Sándor Fellner. The main facade on Holy Trinity (Szentháromság) Square is in late Gothic style. The building initially housed the Ministry of Finance. It was severely damaged during the Second World War and was renovated between 1948 and 1962, based on the plans of Jenő Rados. Between 1954 and 1981, it housed the dormitory of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Informatics of the Budapest University of Technology and Economics, and after 1968, its club served as the center of Budapest’s beat and student life. The rear wings of the building housed a unit of the National Archives of Hungary.
Today, the building is being restored to its original state, with the aim of allowing the Ministry of Finance to move back in. It is protected as a historical monument.
