On September 13-14, NATO’s Military Committee convened in Prague, Czechia, to address critical issues, including the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict and the alliance’s strategic future.
General Gábor Böröndi, Chief of the Hungarian Defense Staff, highlighted that the meeting centered on the “most important issue for NATO today,” which is the war in Ukraine. The General remarked, “the meeting reviewed current trends and actions, including NATO’s vigilance activities and the implementation of previously agreed defense plans.”
Hungary, adhering to its prior stance, will not supply lethal weapons to Ukraine. Instead, the country remains committed to its role in the NATO “vigilance battle group,” which includes Hungarian, Croatian, Turkish, and Italian soldiers working together on training and preparation. General Böröndi underscored this, saying,
Hungary is not supplying any weapons but is continuing to prepare and train the vigilance battle group within NATO’s framework.”
The mood regarding the Ukraine conflict has shifted. The Chief of the General Staff observed, “during the earlier period of the conflict, expectations were very positive, but today, it seems that this optimism is not as high.” This reflects broader uncertainties and a debate within NATO about potential outcomes like peace or a ceasefire, and how the alliance will prepare for 21st-century challenges.
Discussions also included aligning national force development plans with NATO’s strategies.
Additionally, General Böröndi held technical discussions on the future of the multinational division stationed in Székesfehérvár (central Hungary) with General Christopher G. Cavoli and representatives from France and Croatia, emphasizing ongoing cooperation and strategic planning within NATO.
