National Team Goalkeeper Once Again in Kicker’s Dream Team

Hungary Today 2025.05.12.

The name of Péter Gulácsi appears at the top of the weekly dream team list of the German football magazine Kicker following the 33rd round of the Bundesliga.

RB Leipzig’s Hungarian goalkeeper, also a key figure in Hungary’s national football team, was awarded the highest rating as Nr. 1 in a goalless draw against Werder Bremen, in which Zsolt Lőw‘s side scored an away point mainly thanks to him. However, the result also meant that the team, who also employ Hungarian national team player Willi Orbán, will not finish in a Champions League qualifying place.

The 35-year-old Gulácsi has been named in the dream team for the sixth time this season.

Péter Gulácsi has been written off many times, but he has always stood up and proved himself to the doubters, Magyar Nemzet recalls. Although he missed over a year due to a serious knee injury in the autumn of 2022, with hard work he regained his place in RB Leipzig and the Hungarian national football team. Two weeks ago, he was the victim of a horrific collision against Holstein Kiel and was hospitalized. Since then he has missed two matches, but was called back into the line-up at the weekend by Zsolt Lőw.

The Hungarian sportsman has played in 29 league games this season, Saturday’s being the 14th time he has not given up a goal.

However, the joy is mixed with sorrow: with the 0-0 draw in Bremen, it was finally decided that RB Leipzig, who are in seventh place, will not reach the Champions League.  “It is hard to find the words. We couldn’t reach our goal this season and the disappointment is huge. All what left is to try and finish the season with a positive result to secure an international spot and to give back something to our fans. You were there for us yesterday as always,” Gulácsi wrote apologetically on his social media page.
