National Soccer Team to Play behind Closed Doors

MTI-Hungary Today 2023.05.11.

The European Football Association (UEFA) has fined the Serbs €50,000 and they will host Hungary behind closed gates in September at the qualifying round of the European Championship – reports MTI.

The Serbs are being penalized for what happened in the match against Montenegro in Podgorica in March, when their supporters chanted discriminatory slogans. According to UEFA, this activates a previous League of Nations penalty, which was suspended. Serbian fans will also not be allowed to accompany the national team to the away match against the Bulgarians in June.
UEFA is not indicating which match the penalty will be for, but the AP news agency says it will be against Hungary.

The Montenegrins, who hosted the March game, were also fined for similar reasons, having to pay €20,000 and subsequently banned from opening part of the stands for their next home game. Montenegro will next play Hungary at home in June. The Serbs lead Group G with six points from two games, while the Hungarians, who have played one game so far, are second with three points.
