Marco Rossi, coach of the Hungarian national football team, has invited three newcomers to his squad for the European Championship qualifiers and the subsequent friendly match in September.

The Italian coach presented the roster at the training center in Telki, near Budapest on Tuesday. The goalkeepers include Péter Gulácsi, who plays for RB Leipzig, and is returning after a long absence following a knee injury. Soma Szuhodovszki and Krisztofer Horváth from Kecskemét and Mihály Kata from MTK Budapest are also in the squad for the first time.

I cannot count on seven players for various reasons, which is partly why newcomers are included in the roster. It is important to invite players who represent the future,”

highlighted the 58-year-old manager, explaining that Kata and Horváth had been followed for some time, but Szuhodovszki’s performance was a surprise even to Rossi. “Doors are opening, but they have to keep them open by working on their shortcomings day by day.”

As for the returning mainstay Péter Gulácsi, he revealed that the goalkeeper is medically fit, so it was very important for him to be invited back and be part of the national team’s work again.

“It also serves to develop team spirit. Against the Serbs, I am expecting the other three goalkeepers, but I would like to play him in the friendly,” Rossi noted of Gulácsi, who tore his right anterior cruciate ligament on October 5 last year and has not played since.

“I had high expectations from the start, which was unrealistic in the past. But now it is realistic to expect to go straight through,” added Rossi, referring to what promises to be a crucial qualifying campaign for the European Championship.

Hungary, leading the group with seven points, will play a match behind closed doors with Serbia (second in the group with a worse goal difference) in Belgrade next Thursday before hosting the Czechs in a friendly on Sunday.
