National Consultation Shows That Hungarians Are Not Indifferent to Current Affairs

MTI-Hungary Today 2025.01.16.

The 14th national consultation on economic policy was a success, with 1,350,690 responses. The 11 questions received an overwhelming majority of 95-99 percent of responses in favor of the government’s proposals, which shows that there is national consensus on the new economic policy based on neutrality, said the Parliamentary State Secretary of the Prime Minister’s Office at a press conference in Budapest on Wednesday.

Balázs Hidvéghi pointed out that this was one of the most successful national consultations in terms of participation. He emphasized that

the government will assert the will of the Hungarian people in accordance with the responses to the consultation, even if some of these measures go against the wishes of Brussels.

In recent years it has become clear what Brussels’ intentions are: to reduce the sovereignty and freedom of choice of member states and to impose their own positions on an increasing number of issues. Hungary has been resisting this for years, and in this resistance the support of the electorate expressed in national communications is extremely important, the politician emphasized.

He reminded that Brussels has in recent years imposed its position on issues such as immigration, war, gender equality, as well as criticizing the reductions in household utility costs, the 13th monthly pension and the low Hungarian personal income tax. More recently, Brussels has also been trying to define who we can and cannot trade with. This is foreshadowing an economic cold war, clearly against Hungary’s interests, which is why the government needed to ask the Hungarian people for their opinion and to ask for confirmation of its political struggles, Balázs Hidvéghi said.

Turning to the specific questions, he highlighted that on the first two points on economic policy, the Hungarian people supported the government’s position 99 percent. Targeted support for small and medium-sized enterprises was agreed by 97 percent of respondents, and there was similar support for regulating multinational companies.

The proposed wage increase program had 96 percent support, while the “workers’ loan” targeting those under 25 had 95 percent support, the housing subsidy provided by the employer 98 percent and the youth housing subsidy 97 percent.

Protecting the 13th month pension was backed by 98 percent of respondents, while doubling the family tax allowance and rejecting the migration penalty both had 99 percent in favor, the results showed.

Balázs Hidvéghi also pointed out that

the implementation of the proposed measures has already started in some areas: the Demján Sándor Program, the three-year wage increase program, the workers’ loan program, several housing subsidies, the 13th month pension and the decisions on doubling the family tax allowance have been taken.
