MTI-Hungary Today 2025.05.06.

With an investment of HUF 2.2 billion (EUR 5.4 million), the National Cardiovascular Laboratory, initially planned with EU funding, will be built mainly from domestic resources, the Rector of Semmelweis University said on Monday in Herceghalom (near Budapest).

Speaking at the topping out ceremony of the National Cardiovascular Laboratory of Semmelweis University, Béla Merkely said that the university is the leading higher education institution in the country and the region, a true European knowledge center. He added that it is one of the top 300 universities in the world, which also means that it is in the top one percent of universities in the world.

“We are moving forward, and the longer term goal is hopefully by 2030, to be in the top 100 universities in the world, because our aim is to train the best doctors, the best health professionals and to have the scientific excellence that will be a driving force for our nation, even in the field of health innovation,” added the rector.

He noted that

with the investment now underway, the university is taking another step towards the aforementioned vision of becoming one of the world’s top 100 universities, as the project will significantly increase and modernize the university’s teaching and research capacity.

He explained that the institution in Herceghalom will play an important role not only in the training of residents and specialists, but also in the global training of young doctors. He added that a real surgical laboratory will be created here, an area of particular importance for the training of future doctors. The site will also be a base for experimental cardiovascular research.

“We are proud to say that our university, while ranking among the top 300 universities in the world, is a flagship in cardiovascular medicine and is among the top 31 universities in the world in this field,” said Merkely. He added that

the cardiovascular project is looking for answers to problems such as how to effectively preserve the donor heart in heart transplantation to ensure a successful transplant.

The rector of the medical school noted that they are also looking for therapeutic improvements in the treatment of heart failure.

László Lengyel, Vice President for Science and International Affairs at the National Research, Development and Innovation Office (NKFIH), said that good research is always marketable, hence it is worth maintaining quality in every sense. He added that there is always a demand for quality research and quality results.
