This year, global architecture portal Archdaily once again names the world’s best buildings. In the sports category, the National Athletics Center in Budapest is among the nominees.
This is the 16th time Archdaily has selected the best buildings of the year, with more than 4,000 projects in 15 categories. The first round of voting started on January 28 and will run until February 12.
“We are very honored by this news.
The ‘Queen’s Crown,’ the National Athletics Center, which hosted the 2023 World Athletics Championships, is making its debut in front of a wide audience of architectural professionals.
Last autumn, the crown structure of the facility on the banks of the Danube, with a panoramic sports ring covering several hectares, was opened to the public, and is rightly called the world’s first open arena,” Marcel Ferencz, who conceived and designed the athletics center, told holmozogj.hu.
In September 2017, the Hungarian Athletics Association bid for the right to host the 2023 World Athletics Championships with the stadium, which was then under construction. The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) announced the following December that Budapest had been awarded the right to organize the event.
The National Athletics Center was reopened last year and is now open to the public.
Anyone can use the Stadium Park free of charge, as well as the panoramic running track with a roof on top of the grandstand, the Panorama Sports Park.
This is the stadium’s clear star attraction, as it offers a beautiful view of the capital and the Danube.
The Sports Park has a wide range of outdoor sports equipment primarily for adults, but there are also tools that children can use.
The Stadium Park surrounding the building, offers a range of services for children and adults alike. There is a playground for children, as well as a fitness park with street workout equipment for sports enthusiasts. For those looking for a more extreme adventure, there is no need to go far, with bouldering walls and a skate park in the immediate vicinity of the stadium.
