Most Popular Universities and Majors Revealed

Hungary Today 2024.07.01.

The fate of 120,990 students will be decided on July 24, when the university admission thresholds for this year’s higher education admissions are announced, as this is how many have applied to a university’s bachelor, master or diploma courses starting in September 2024. The top five universities include both metropolitan and rural institutions, writes Világgazdaság.

According to the Educational Authority, 67 percent of applicants applied for bachelor’s degrees, 20 percent for master’s degrees, 10 percent for non-university courses and 3 percent for higher education vocational courses. Business studies are popular, but there has also been an increase in interest in teacher training and in technical, IT and natural science courses.

Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) attracted the largest number of applicants again this year, with a total of 17,080,

followed by the three largest universities in the provinces. The second most popular higher education institution with 9,950 applicants is the University of Debrecen (eastern Hungary), the third is the University of Szeged (southern Hungary) with 8,395 applicants and the fourth is the University of Pécs (southwestern Hungary) with 7,292 applicants.

The fifth most popular higher education institution was the Budapest Business University, with 6,729 applicants.

Eduline also reported that although ELTE has been the most popular Hungarian university for years, this year the number of students eligible for state scholarships is down by 1,800 to 10,820.

With 6,801 applicants, the most popular major is again the Bachelor of Business Administration and Management,

followed by

  • Psychology,
  • Law,
  • Nursing and patient care, and
  • Commerce and Marketing.

As Világgazdaság previously reported, it is difficult to predict this year’s thresholds. The current situation is also complicated by the fact that students’ scores may vary from university to university due to institutional points, as the number of points for a language exam, for example, or for a higher level school leaving certificate, varies from institution to institution.

It should be noted that the e-admission system allows students to make administrative changes, i.e. upload documents obtained after the deadline for applications, change the order of universities (only once) or modify some details, and withdraw some or all of the applications, until July 10 at the latest.
