From September, the salaries of Hungarian soldiers will increase by an average of 26 percent, but the increase will vary according to the category of personnel, the defense minister said in a video message posted on his social networking site on Thursday.
Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky announced that the government has decided on a priority salary increase for soldiers in two stages: first from September this year and then from January 2024. He added that the first day of September will be the start of the period for which soldiers will receive the priority pay.
The Minister stressed the need to elevate readiness, compensate soldiers for the added burden of the changing security environment and an increased show of appreciation.
This pay increase is substantial, averaging 26 percent, but it varies by category of personnel.

In the video message, Bobrovniczky said that the salary of a soldier without a high school diploma used to be 280,000 forints (EUR 700), but now it will increase to 400,000 forints (EUR 1000), while the salary of a soldier with a high school diploma will be raised from 323,000 to 415,000 forints. A sergeant in non-commissioned ranks could take home a little more than 421,000 forints, which is now 533,000 forints, the Minister wrote. He added that the salary of junior lieutenants will increase from 468,000 to 585,000 forints (EUR 1,460).
