The number of people planning to travel has increased this year, according to a representative survey commissioned by supermarket chain ALDI’s online travel platform. Around 60 percent of travelers are going abroad, almost 30 percent of them will travel domestically, and 10 percent of them are still undecided. They are spending an average of HUF 338,000 (EUR 900) per household for the holiday, the company told MTI.
According to the research and ALDI Travel’s experience, most people travel by car to neighboring countries, typically for four to seven days, looking for cheap accommodation, but demand is also growing for exclusive cruises.
While 52 percent of economically active people of working age planned to take a domestic holiday in the summer of 2022, now 57 percent are planning to do so this year. The proportion of those planning a holiday abroad has risen from 23 percent in 2022 to 29 percent now.
Croatia is the most popular destination among the respondents, followed by Austria and Italy.
For around two-thirds of respondents, the length of domestic holidays is a few days. 31 percent plan a domestic holiday of a week or more. The proportion is similar for those planning a trip abroad.
Those traveling outside the country’s borders typically spend a week abroad.
The highest proportion of those planning a one-week holiday abroad has increased from 10 to 15 percent, Aldi Travel highlights.
According to the statement, both domestic and international travel is most popular among those who consider themselves well-off, and childless couples. The proportion not planning to travel in 2023, is highest among those under 35, the non-affluent, and those living alone. The more affluent Hungarians spend 40 percent more, on average HUF 473,000 (EUR 1,265) on their holiday. Working age people spend an average of HUF 126,000 (EUR 335) per person on travel.
