MoonRad Industry Day Reveals Ambitious Plans for Lunar Exploration

MTI-Hungary Today 2025.06.03.

With the aim of expanding its role in space research, Hungary hosted MoonRad Industry Day on Monday. The event, organized by the HUN-REN Hungarian Research Network, the Ministry for National Economy, and the European Space Agency (ESA), served to present the MoonRad Lunar Exploration Space Weather Monitoring SmallSat Mission and establish a potential international industrial consortium.

Around 130 participants, including numerous Hungarian and international experts, researchers, and industry representatives, attended the event to learn about the project, which aims to strengthen the Hungarian space industry internationally, reads a statement from the Ministry.

Szabolcs Szolnoki, Deputy State Secretary at the Ministry for National Economy, emphasized at the opening of the event that

the MoonRad mission is not only scientifically important, but could also enable Hungary to play a leading role in a sovereign European space mission.

He added that Hungary’s technological and scientific expertise should be aligned with the defense policy objectives of the ESA Strategy 2040.

As host, Gyula Sümeghy, head of the international cabinet of HUN-REN, presented the most important space research activities of the Hungarian research network. In addition, a three-member delegation from ESA gave presentations on the future of the lunar research program and the role of smaller ESA member states.

During the course of the day, the “MoonRad” mission proposal (lunar-space weather research small satellite constellation) was presented,

a joint project between REMRED Technology Development Zrt. and the HUN-REN Center for Energy Research that is currently in phase 0. The mission’s goal is to establish a European small satellite constellation around the moon to provide data on space weather and space dosimetry. This information is crucial for future manned and robotic lunar missions.

In addition to presenting the project, the Industry Day also offered B2B meetings to promote international cooperation, particularly with partners from Slovenia, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia.
