“We shall preserve our identity, because without identity there is no capacity to act, and we shall elect such people to lead our bodies and the country, who are capable of actually using this capacity to act,” said János Csák, Minister of Culture and Innovation at the renewal general assembly of the Hungarian Academy of Arts (MMA).

“Without identity there is no capacity to act, those who do not know who they are, do not know where to go. This is true for us as people and true for our institutions. Therefore, it is worth appreciating those who work for this institution, the members of the board,” the Minister said, highlighting the importance of MMA members.

He clearly emphasized that in spite of several changes in the world, it is getting even more significant to be aware of our tradition, because when political ideologies are drowned out, the only thing people may turn to is art.

The minister recalled that the creative power and capacity for action that forms identity is shared by poet Sándor Petőfi, writer Imre Madách, and also by scientists Katalin Karikó and Ferenc Krausz, who were awarded the Nobel Prize this week. “This country, this nation, is economically strong, culturally confident, (…) we have an identity, we have the capacity to act,” he underlined.

János Csák stressed that the state would continue to provide support to the MMA, and recalled that the government spent more than one percent of the country’s GDP on financing culture, which is double the European average.
