On December 1st, the Miskolc Advent Fair and the famous Advent Tram opened with a candle-lighting ceremony, officially marking the beginning of a magical season. With four distinct festive sites, engaging performances, and interactive attractions, Miskolc (northeastern Hungary) has transformed into a true fairytale town, inviting families and visitors of all ages to share in the holiday spirit.
This year, Miskolc offers an array of festive experiences across four enchanting locations, writes Turizmus.com. The Santa Claus Train to Lillafüred (officially a part of Miskolc, though it is almost 12 kilometers away from the city), and a child-friendly Christmas world at Avalon Park provide rich experiences. Additionally, dazzling light installations in Diósgyőr (part of Miskolc) and the festive, musical light show at the Avasi Lookout Tower (Miskolc-Avas TV Tower) enhance the city’s charm.
The centerpiece of it all is the Advent market on Szent István Square, featuring Europe’s most beautiful Advent Tram.
A highlight for families is the interactive Santa Claus Train, whisking passengers from Miskolc to the breathtaking scenery of Lillafüred. The journey culminates in a magical Fairytale Kingdom, where a 110-minute program awaits, including two fairy-tale performances and a meeting with Santa Claus himself. Children receive a festive parcel, and Krampus characters keep everyone entertained on board.
A significant draw is the famous Miskolc Advent Tram, a European award-winning attraction known for its elaborate themes. This year’s theme, inspired by Sleeping Beauty, promises to transform the city into a scene straight out of a storybook. The tram features intricate decorations, light curtains, and 3D elements, creating an immersive, festive atmosphere. Passengers enjoy a warm, cozy ride surrounded by Christmas trees and soft textiles, with a festive fireplace adding to the ambiance.

A seasonal highlight is the spectacular light show at the iconic Avasi Lookout Tower. Resembling a Christmas tree, the lookout’s festive lighting dances to the sound of holiday melodies every Advent Sunday. Starting at 4:45 pm., these musical light performances on December 1, 8, 15, and 22 offer visitors a unique, heartwarming experience in the heart of the city.
