Construction and Transport Minister János Lázár has claimed that Debrecen (eastern Hungary) should become one of the strongest cities in the eastern region of the country, Világgazdaság reports.

“We want to turn Debrecen into a city like Hamburg in Germany: one of the capitals of the region,” János Lázár announced on Tuesday morning. He added that in addition to factory development, this would require HUF 700 billion (EUR 1.8 billion) for infrastructure development to serve the needs of the factories, as the community could grow by 50,000 people.

At a press conference on the change of tariffs in local transport, he also said that a development package of HUF 300-350 billion (EUR 790 million) would benefit the city.

Central and eastern Hungary will change for the better,”

Lázár continued, stressing the need to develop and widen the surrounding motorways and even to build a new tramlink-train line.

The other speaker at the press conference, László Papp, Mayor of Debrecen, explained in detail that a strategic cooperation between the ministry and Debrecen has been established. In this framework, the two parties reviewed the ongoing issues, which will eventually lead to

a total development of HUF 340 billion (EUR 900 million) in the city.

These are mainly infrastructure developments, for instance, 19 transport development projects worth HUF 20 billion (EUR 53 million).

The mayor added that

by 2030, Debrecen will account for 4.5 percent of Hungary’s GDP.

As he said, the transport of large rural cities and agglomerations needs to be rethought, and therefore public transport will remain the focus of Debrecen’s city administration. He announced that from April 1, 2024, students under the age of 14 in Debrecen will be able to use public transport free of charge.

“I am confident that this will give a boost to public transport,” added Papp, in the hope that this will also help to return public transport to the level it was before the COVID pandemic.
