The EU Presidency presents a significant opportunity to enhance Hungary’s standing in the European Union, as emphasized by the Minister of Public Administration and Regional Development during a workshop at the National University of Public Service (NKE) in Budapest.
Tibor Navracsics highlighted the unique character of the upcoming Presidency, coinciding with institutional changes marked by the European Parliament elections on June 9, the nomination of the new President of the European Commission at the end of June, and subsequent transitions in the European Parliament and Commission.
Reflecting on Hungary’s previous presidency in 2011, he noted that while it was considered a “standard policy presidency,” experiences from other member states suggest that presidencies during such transitions should not compromise on policy ambitions.
The minister stressed the importance of maintaining ideological neutrality for a successful presidency, underlining the necessity of earning trust from other member states.
János Bóka, Minister for EU Affairs, highlighted the need for a seamless transition from “campaign mode” to “presidency mode,” considering the ongoing setup of the European Parliament and the transition within the European Commission.
Mr. Bóka underlined the necessity of managing the institutional transition smoothly, with the Council of the European Union providing stability. He also emphasized Hungary’s strong European policy, which will guide the presidency’s priorities, including addressing competitiveness challenges, defense and security policy, migration, and enlargement to the Western Balkans.
The Hungarian presidency aims to prioritize strong policy objectives and provide a consensus response to challenges.
He stated that Hungary would act as an honest broker, acknowledging the scrutiny they will face while striving to increase their maneuverability in the future.
During a round table discussion, Tibor Navracsics acknowledged the expected provocations during the presidency, emphasizing the need to maintain strategic calm. According to János Bóka, the presidency should not forcefully impose Hungarian interests but rather work within the framework of European interests with a touch of Hungarian flavor.
