South Transdanubia emerges as the most affected region in Hungary’s post-communist transition period. Addressing this issue, the Minister of Regional Development emphasized the need to replicate the successful economic growth witnessed in North-East Hungary.

Tibor Navracsics highlighted Northeastern Hungary’s progress in income, employment, and infrastructure and proposed similar initiatives for South Transdanubia, encompassing transport infrastructure improvements like the construction of the Danube bridge in Mohács.

The minister expressed confidence that investments in the Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences campus, regional development, transport infrastructure, and industrial parks would serve as catalysts for the region.

He envisioned the Pécs-Kaposvár axis as pivotal for propelling the region towards convergence with the EU average.

The minister underscored the importance of regional development policies over settlement-focused approaches. Collaborating with Károly Szita, mayor of Kaposvár (seat of Somogy County), the focus is on holistic urban development linked to the city’s vitality, fostering incremental progress.

In contrast to Pécs’s (seat of Baranya County) declining economic appeal, Kaposvár emerges as a potential growth center due to its industrial, educational, and healthcare significance. Positioned strategically, it serves as a bridge between Lake Balaton’s economic strength and Inner-Somogy County’s potential.

Plans for South Transdanubia include a comprehensive model program, with a focus on developing a large industrial park in Kaposvár and repurposing the former military airport in Taszár.

Key infrastructure projects such as the Kaposvár northern bypass and the motorway to Pécs through Somogy County are identified as crucial for the region’s development.

Furthermore, the Minister highlighted the post-pandemic surge in online trade and the increasing demand for private air travel among affluent citizens. This emphasizes the need for accessible airport facilities, not as luxuries but as essential components of everyday economic life.

In conclusion, Tibor Navracsics’ vision for South Transdanubia focuses on leveraging strategic investments, regional collaboration, and targeted development policies to revitalize the region and propel it towards sustainable economic growth and convergence with EU standards.
