Minister János Csák Recipient of Wekerle Sándor Prize

MTI-Hungary Today 2023.01.20.

The Grand Prize of the Wekerle Sándor Carpathian Basin Economic Prize was awarded to Minister of Culture and Innovation János Csák, while the Junior Prize was awarded to Olivér Hortay, Director of Századvég Konjunktúrakutató Zrt. The award was presented by György Matolcsy, President of the Central Bank of Hungary, on Thursday at the award ceremony in Budapest.

The award, named after former Finance Minister and Prime Minister Sándor Wekerle, is given to those who represent modernization and innovation and serve the unified economic construction of the Carpathian Basin, said György Matolcsy. He stressed that Sándor Wekerle was a symbol of civilization, and that it is important to cherish his person and his life’s work “because we want to build an era of broad civilization in Hungary”.
The economic unity of the Carpathian Basin, which was lost after Trianon peace treaty in 1920, can only be regained through economic, financial, cultural and innovative means, the central bank president stressed. In his tribute to János Csák, he said that his life’s work sent out the message that

reforms within the company and the aspiration to renew the country coincide.

János Csák is now in a position to organize an innovative unified space in the Carpathian Basin, he added.
In his speech after receiving the award, the culkture minister said that a country can be successful if it maintains its cultural, economic and spiritual heritage in the face of constant change. He called it a task to “nurture the bonds”, to create peace and security, to find the balances that will “bring us to our ancient crédos, which is God, family, homeland”.
The award was established by the Fejér County Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the Hungarian National Bank took over the care of the award in 2019, before re-establishing it as a state award in 2021.
The award is given to outstanding professionals and young talents who contribute to the development of financial awareness through their outstanding work and support the financial education of young people, thus contributing to the increase of the domestic knowledge capital.
Last year, the Grand Prize was awarded to Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and the Junior Prize to Dezső Farkas, a young entrepreneur.
