Hungary aims to strengthen its economic, cultural, and political ties with Bavaria, Minister Gergely Gulyás emphasized during an official visit to Munich.
In an interview with MTI (the Hungarian news agency), Minister Gulyás highlighted Bavaria’s significant role as one of Hungary’s most important economic partners. He also noted that Bavaria values its relations with Hungary, as both share mutual concerns and priorities.
Migration was a key issue discussed during the meetings. Mr. Gulyás criticized the European Union’s failure to adequately protect the Schengen Area’s external borders, a failure he believes jeopardizes free movement and trade.
He stated that “Bavaria is a victim of this failure,” referring to the region’s challenges in managing migration pressures.
This sentiment aligns with concerns expressed by Bavarian leaders about migration’s impact on both Bavaria and Hungary.
Despite Fidesz’s (Hungary’s governing party) departure from the European People’s Party, Gergely Gulyás described the meetings as “friendly and constructive.” He met with several Bavarian politicians, including the Chancellor of Bavaria and CSU representatives, to discuss topics of mutual interest, particularly migration and border protection.
Florian Herrmann, head of the Bavarian State Chancellery, has frequently emphasized the importance of cooperation with European partners, including Hungary, especially in matters of migration and European policy.
As the Aussiedlerbote reported, Mr. Herrmann plays a crucial role in Bavaria’s European affairs. Eric Beißwenger, recently appointed Minister for European Affairs in Bavaria, also focuses on fostering partnerships within Europe, although no direct comments from him regarding this specific meeting have been reported.
The visit underscores the resilience of Hungarian-Bavarian relations, as both regions continue to engage on key issues despite broader political shifts in Europe.
