Hungary’s foreign policy, centered on national sovereignty, will continue to face significant challenges and attacks from the liberal mainstream in the coming year, according to Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó.
Speaking at the Tranzit Festival in Tihany (northern shore of Lake Balaton), Mr. Szijjártó outlined the perceived threats and defended Hungary’s stance against what he views as concerted efforts to undermine the country’s political and economic security.
The Foreign Minister emphasized the importance of preserving Hungary’s sovereignty, stating that this is not merely a political ideology but “a matter of life and death for the nation.” He argued that Hungary’s insistence on sovereignty has positioned it as “the antithesis of the liberal mainstream.”
Péter Szijjártó criticized the liberal mainstream for using various methods, including political, legal, and economic pressures, to suppress differing viewpoints.
He also noted the extreme measures some take against political opponents, citing assassination attempts on Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico and US presidential candidate Donald Trump as examples of “physical annihilation” used against those who do not conform to the liberal agenda.
According to the Foreign Minister, the international community, particularly the liberal mainstream, attacks Hungary’s foreign policies because the country refuses to align with the broader ideological trends dominating Europe and the West. He suggested that the liberal mainstream targets Hungary because of its pro-peace and conservative stances, especially regarding conflicts like the war in Ukraine.
Hungary has become the last obstacle to the unbridled, uncontrolled European rampage of war psychosis,” he claimed, adding that this perspective is why Hungary faces significant opposition for its peace efforts.
Mr. Szijjártó maintained a firm stance on Hungary’s foreign policies, insisting that Hungary will not succumb to international pressure. He emphasized that Hungary’s primary goal is to protect its national interests rather than serve external agendas, stating, “our task is to assert Hungarian national interests in the world, and not to assert external interests in Hungary.” He also criticized the European Union’s handling of energy policy, highlighting what he perceives as hypocrisy in their actions, such as buying Russian energy through indirect means while publicly condemning such practices. He argued, “energy policy is still seen by many as an ideological, not a physical, issue.”
The Foreign Minister’s remarks underscore Hungary’s commitment to its sovereign foreign policy, despite ongoing international criticism and pressure. The Hungarian government remains resolute in its stance against aligning with the liberal mainstream and intends to continue prioritizing national interests.
