Minister Condemns EU Commission Ban on Russian Gas as Threat to Low Utility Bills

Hungary Today 2025.05.08.

Brussels’ proposal on Tuesday aimed at preventing any future energy cooperation between Russia and European countries is a “crystal clear attack” on Hungary’s utility cost reduction, Péter Szijjártó, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade posted on his Facebook page on Wednesday.

In the video, Péter Szijjártó called the decision ‘shocking,’ and said that if Hungary cannot buy natural gas, crude oil, and nuclear fuel from Russia, the country’s energy import costs will increase by around HUF 600 billion (EUR 1.48 billion), which means that a “dramatic attack” will take place against utility cost reduction.

Essentially, this is how they want to make the Hungarian people pay for Ukraine’s “senseless and excessive” support, part of which is Ukraine’s accelerated entry into the European Union,

he emphasized.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade stressed that they will not allow the Hungarian people to pay the price for Ukraine’s accelerated accession.

“We will protect the Hungarian people from this, we will protect the utility cost reduction, and we will not allow these prices in Hungary to skyrocket, as is already the case in many European countries,” Szijjártó declared.
