Michelle Gulyás Triumphs Against All Odds, Bringing Home Olympic Gold in Pentathlon

MTI-Hungary Today 2024.08.12.

Michelle Gulyás triumphed at the Paris Olympics, winning a gold medal in pentathlon with a stellar performance, continuing Hungary’s legacy in the sport. Blanka Guzi also made significant strides, finishing fourth, showcasing the strength of Hungarians in this special event.

In the final pentathlon competition held at the picturesque Château de Versailles, Michelle Gulyás excelled across all events. She began Sunday’s final in second place, thanks to a strong performance in the fencing round where she won 24 bouts. Her flawless horse riding further solidified her position, and despite intense pressure from a crowd of 15,000 cheering for local favorite Elodie Clouvel, Gulyás maintained her composure during the laser run. Starting 13 seconds behind Clouvel, Gulyás quickly took the lead after Clouvel faltered in the first shooting round.

Gulyás’ steady runs and accurate shooting secured her victory with a world record score of 1,461 points, marking Hungary’s 19th medal at the Paris Olympics.

Reflecting on her journey, Gulyás said, “I really had the unity behind me that I needed; otherwise, I would not have a gold medal.” She also spoke about overcoming difficulties, stating, “when I am hit by a lot of negative things, I do not know what happens to me, but I can draw strength from that and overcome them in a way that surprises everyone around me.” After her final victory, she shared the moment of realization,

when I saw France’s Elodie Clouvel at two and South Korea’s Song Sunmin at one green light, I knew I would be first.”

Michelle Gulyás’ gold medal at the Paris Olympics is not only a personal triumph but also a significant achievement for Hungarian pentathlon. Her mental resilience and physical prowess were evident throughout the competition.
