Michelle Gulyás, gold medalist at the 2024 Paris Olympics, was named Women’s Pentathlete of the Year by the UIPM (Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne) at its congress in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, reports Index.
The athlete received the honor after a challenging qualification process. Despite finishing with zero points at the World Championships in June and placing 18th, Michelle Gulyás was selected over Rita Erdős by the UIPM board in a secret ballot, with a 9:2 vote in her favor. Gulyás had been second before the final competition but overtook her French rival to maintain the top spot.
Reflecting on her achievement, Gulyás shared:
I do not usually wake up feeling like an Olympic champion, but I meet a lot of people every day who remind me of that and tell me how much my racing has given them, and it gives me a fantastic feeling.”
The UIPM congress also elected Robert Stull as the new president of the federation for a four-year term. Gulyás was recently an invited guest at the 7th Sport and Innovation Conference at the University of Physical Education and Sport Sciences, where she discussed her Olympic success.
Her victory was celebrated as part of a wider recognition of Hungarian athletes, following 20-year-old Petra Simon’s selection as the International Handball Federation’s Best Young Handball Player of the Year.
