Mercedes-Benz’s Kecskemét Plant to Reduce Shifts due to Technological Transformation

Hungary Today 2024.06.27.

The Mercedes factory in Kecskemét (central Hungary) will switch from three to two shifts starting in July, confirmed the German company to hiros.hu, according to Világgazdaság. During this time, some workers will undergo vocational and further training for future model production.

Jens Bühler, managing director of Mercedes-Benz Manufacturing Hungary Kft. since January, discussed the shift change with baon.hu. He explained the necessity of transitioning from compact segment products to the new MMA (Mercedes-Benz Modular Architecture) platform models, marking a significant technological advancement for the factory.

We are fully engaged in converting our equipment and rebuilding our factories,”

Mr. Bühler stated. Extended production shutdowns since last Christmas were to create the right conditions for this conversion. The two-shift operation is intended to facilitate this work. Addressing rumors about production halts due to weak demand, he clarified they are in a transitional phase, with current models nearing the end of their lifecycle.

Mercedes-Benz informed hiros.hu that modifications and rebuilds are underway at the factory to prepare for the new models.

Production of the MMA platform is expected mid-decade, followed by the MB.EA platform (Mercedes-Benz Electric Architecture) for all-electric models.

This coincides with recent negotiations between Mercedes-Benz and the Hungarian government. In Stuttgart, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán agreed with the company’s management on a more than EUR 1B investment to expand the Kecskemét plant.

PM Orbán revealed that he has seen the confidential new models.

Mercedes-Benz assures that the two-shift schedule will not have direct impact on job numbers.
