“Another shameful resolution condemning Hungary has been adopted by the Soros-sympathizing majority in the European Parliament,” said Balázs Hidvéghi, Fidesz MEP, describing the resolution as “pure political blackmail.”
The Hungarian government is putting EU values, institutions, and resources at risk, the European Parliament said on Thursday, calling for their protection at the EU level during Hungary’s six-month presidency of the EU Council, starting on July 1. Adopted by 345 votes to 104 with 29 abstentions, MEPs expressed concern with the resolution about the alleged erosion of democracy, the rule of law, and fundamental rights in Hungary, particularly through the recently adopted law on the protection of sovereignty.
They called on the European Council of national leaders to determine whether Hungary has committed a serious and persistent breach of EU values under the Article 7 procedure. They also deplored the European Commission’s decision to release EUR 10.2 billion of previously frozen funds, despite Hungary’s failure to deliver on reforms to ensure the independence of the judiciary, according to the EP.
In a video message, government politician Balázs Hidvégi said that if anyone had any doubts about the reason for the decision, then the speech of Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Wednesday “was an open admission.”
The European Commission President said that Hungary’s migration policy and child protection law are the reasons why a significant amount of EU money is being withheld. In Hidvéghi’s opinion, this was unacceptable. The Fidesz MEP stressed that they will not give in to blackmail, will not allow Hungary to be turned into an immigration country, and will protect their children from LGBTQ propaganda.
