Industry sources have revealed that MÁV-Start will put nine more Siemens Eurosprinter tram locomotives into service, reports iho.hu. The railway company confirmed the news to the transportation news portal.
“To alleviate the shortage of vehicles, short-term solutions are also needed; therefore, in accordance with previous plans, we will use the option for the 15 second-hand Siemens Eurosprinter ES 64 U2 V7 type dual power, high-capacity electric locomotives leased from Akiem, so that
nine more vehicles can be delivered to MÁV-Start.
The traction vehicles will be placed in service on a continuous basis after technical preparation. The majority of the option quantity will be used for international traffic,” the Hungarian railway company said.
However, they added that “at this stage of the technical discussions, we are not yet in a position to provide further information.” As they wrote, “our aim is still to put new locomotives into service as soon as possible on the most favorable terms, and we will not give up the purchase of new vehicles.”
The portal recalls that the previous fifteen high-capacity, dual-current ES 64 U2s, equipped with ETCS on-board train control, entered service in the second half of October last year.
The locomotives are authorized to run at speeds of up to 160 km/h in Hungary, but outside Hungary they also have access to the networks of Germany, Austria, Romania, Croatia, and Serbia.
The contract was signed by the group’s subsidiary, MÁV Rail Tours with Akiem SAS. MÁV-Start will use the locomotives under the existing cooperation agreement with MÁV Rail Tours Kft.
