There is a high chance that the price reduction measure will not be phased out after May 31, and will likely be extended to household goods, announced the Minister for National Economy at a press conference in Budapest on Monday.

Márton Nagy explained that the measure regarding the margin freeze can be withdrawn without risk if food inflation falls below five percent on a sustained basis. If the government decides to extend it, it is expected to last until the end of the summer, he said. Ten additional food product groups are being considered for inclusion in the scope of the measure, but the government will wait to see how inflation develops in May and June, he added.

The Minister announced that

next week, the government will discuss extending the price reduction to household goods, toiletries, and childcare products.

They are looking at 25-30 product categories in this group, which could mean thousands of different items.

Nagy added that the question of whether there is justification for maintaining the measure in another form, even permanently, has been raised, pointing out that many countries have introduced similar measures on a permanent basis.

Fact

The government introduced a margin freeze on March 17, as a result of which the price of hundreds of products has fallen noticeably. Some have fallen in price by more than fifty percent, while dozens of items’ price reduction was more than forty percent. Those with the biggest price reductions are dairy products.
