A new golden age in the political relations between Hungary and the United States is imminent, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó said on Sunday in a video posted on Facebook following a telephone conversation with his new US counterpart Marco Rubio.
A new era in world politics has dawned with Donald Trump taking office in the United States, Péter Szijjártó stressed in the video. He added that with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, “we reaffirmed our mutual commitment to reestablish and rebuild the political relationship between the United States and Hungary.”
The Hungarian Foreign Minister pointed out that “under the Democrat Party administration, this system of relations has reached a low point, but now
Marco Rubio has made it clear that he and the presidential administration are interested in rebuilding the Hungarian-American system of relations and making it as good as it has ever been.”
“This telephone conversation also confirmed that a new golden age of political relations between the United States and Hungary is imminent,” he said.
The US Secretary of State confirmed that one of the most important objectives of Donald Trump and the US administration is to end the war in Ukraine. Péter Szijjártó noted that the two sides reaffirmed their mutual commitment to peace, “and my colleague assured me that President Donald Trump has a very important goal of ending the war that has been going on in our neighborhood for three years. I assured Secretary of State Marco Rubio that Hungary will continue to enthusiastically, firmly and vocally support all initiatives that can bring us closer to an end to war and peace.”
He also drew attention to the fact that the new US President and his administration, as well as the Hungarian government, share the same position on important issues.
I welcomed the US presidential decrees issued this week, that are fully in line with the Hungarian government’s policy on migration, peace or war, support for families, respect for sovereignty, and patriotism,”
he said.
During the conversation “we did not hide the fact that the previous administration saw us as enemies, and that they took a number of measures against us out of revenge.” His US counterpart assured him that
when he talks about rebuilding the Hungarian-American political relationship, he also means that the previous measures taken in retaliation will be reviewed by the new US administration.”
Marco Rubio also expressed his wish to meet his Hungarian counterpart in person as soon as possible.
