Manfred Weber Scraping the “Hungarian Barrel” with TISZA MEPs’ Accession

After not being able to force his will on Viktor Orbán’s Fidesz MEPs to take them to the left of the political spectrum with the rest of the European People’s Party (EPP), Manfred Weber will now arrive in Budapest on Friday to discuss the accession of the seven TISZA Party MEPs who have won mandates in Sunday’s election. The news was announced by Péter Magyar, the vice-president of the TISZA Party, on his Facebook page, reports 24.hu.

The entry of the Tisza Party MEPs is supported by an overwhelming majority within the People’s Party.

The only exception may be the Fidesz-KDNP MEP currently sitting in the EPP,” wrote Magyar incorrectly, as Mr. Hölvényi is an MEP for the Hungarian Christian Democrats only, not of Fidesz.

Before the elections, the leader of the EPP had made it clear that the party family’s door was open to Tisza.

However, TISZA’s membership in the EPP requires the approval of the majority of current members.  In return for membership in the group, Magyar’s delegates will be expected to rubber-stamp the EPP’s pro-migration position, such as its support for the European migration pact, as well as their policy on arming Ukraine, which is in direct contradiction with the Hungarian government’s position. Among the Hungarian governing parties, only Fidesz turned its back on the EPP in 2021. For now, KDNP remains a full member of the group, and is expected to maintain its position as the largest political group in the EP for the next term.
