Magical Musical and Dance Performance at this Year’s Hollókő Easter Festival

The Hollókő Easter Festival welcomes visitors with folklore programs, Palóc (Hungarian regional group) gastronomy, the revival of local traditions, and the customary Easter sprinkling. This year’s four-day event will also feature concerts, family activities, and children’s programs in the UNESCO World Heritage village of Hollókő, located in Nógrád County (North-Hungary).

On Good Friday, April 18, all programs will be free. There will be a craft fair, egg painting at various locations, screenings of archive photos and old Hollókő films at the Visitor Center, where visitors can also learn about traditional local fasting customs.

On Holy Saturday,

gastronomic and folk heritage programs will be held in the courtyards of the Old Village, including traditional wooden clapper noisemaking and depictions of rural life.

The Nógrád Dance Ensemble will teach folk dances, while the Nógrád Folk Dance Group will perform traditional round dances and scenes in folk costumes. Visitors can also learn how to make plum dumplings with the tradition keepers from Kétbodony (North-Hungary).

The Easter Sunday mass begins at 9:30 AM, followed by the resurrection procession.

Guests will be welcome with sprinkling at the church and at the lower well, while the Nógrád Dance Ensemble, the Fonó Folk Dance Ensemble, and the FOLT Band will entertain with songs and dances.

At the Guzsalyas Costume Exhibition, visitors can listen to folk tales by János Bukovics, the Palóc storyteller.

Fact

The Palóc are a subgroup of ethnic Hungarians living in northern Hungary and southern Slovakia. Known for preserving unique customs and speaking a notably distinct Hungarian dialect, the Palóc are widely recognized as part of the broader Hungarian ethnic group.

On Sunday and Monday, programs will also be held at the Pajtaárok stage. After the opening at 11:00 AM on Sunday, various music and dance workshops and concerts take place. In the evening, there will be a sprinkling dance house at the Dr. Román András Visitor House with the Dűvő Band and the Nógrád Dance Ensemble.

On Monday, following Easter mass, visitors can enjoy the “Great Easter Sprinkling” in the Old Village, with more music and dance performances.

According to the organizers, the event is free for children under seven years old and for those presenting a disability certificate for mobility, hearing, or vision impairments. Their companions can visit the festival with a discounted ticket.

Fact

Sprinkling is a Central European Easter tradition. According to this custom, on Easter Monday, from dawn, boys sprinkle water, or more recently, only fragrant cologne, on the familiar girls.

The Hollókő Easter Festival and Hollókő Old Village can only be visited with the official event ticket, which must be purchased from Saturday to Monday. The entrance ticket includes admission to all programs and certain attractions in the village.
