One of the most beautiful buildings of Fonyód (southern shores of Lake Balaton), the Zichy Chateau is looking for a new owner. The property is attractive not only because of its fabulous surroundings, but also because the walls of the building hold fascinating stories. Sonline reported that they have found out why the mansion is being sold.
The Zichy Chateau in Fonyód is a real historical gem. Built in the early 1900s, it was used as a summer residence by Count Béla Zichy and his family. The hunting lodge stands out among the properties on the shores of Lake Balaton not only for its elegant exterior but also for its fascinating history.
The building has seen many things over the years. It began as a noble residence, a family retreat where its former owner hosted stately gatherings and hunting parties. During the communist regime it was used but it was under-appreciated. Few might believe it, but the subsequent owner of the mansion once worked there as a cobbler and his wife as a day laborer. As the chateau ‘s website reads, until the 1980s the building was used as an office for the local peat mine, while its condition deteriorated year by year.
In the 1990s, thanks to a special family effort, it was restored to its original hunting lodge character. Everyone in the family was involved in the rebuilding, even the octogenarian grandmother.
The chateau is still this family’s property on paper, however they no longer live in Fonyód. The father is often abroad and his kids live in Budapest, no one has the time or energy to take care of the mansion anymore, reveled Valéria Erős, who’s job is to sell the expensive building.
The mansion, after serving as a popular catering establishment for decades, is waiting for its new owner at a price of HUF 790 million (EUR 2 million).
