Liverpool and Glasgow’s Metro Cars Built in Hungary’s Szolnok Plant

Hungary Today 2024.06.03.

Swiss railway vehicle company Stadler is building the new train cars for the Tyne and Wear Metro in the UK. Out of the 46 units planned, 23 have been delivered. Hungarian workers play a crucial role in the success of this project, as the vehicle bodies are manufactured at Stadler’s plant in Szolnok (Great Plain region of Hungary).

SZOLJON reports that according to the Stadler Group, testing and commissioning are well underway, marking this as a symbolic milestone that demonstrates the progress of the replacement program.

This plant is now the largest aluminum car body manufacturing facility in the group,

contributing significantly to Stadler’s production of high-tech vehicles.

Half of the Tyne and Wear Metro trains made and delivered by Stadler for Nexus (Tyne and Wear Passenger Transport Executive) are now completed, bringing the fleet closer to entering service. Additional trains will be completed in the coming months, with ongoing testing on the local network.

The new trains are designed to be safe, reliable, and comfortable, featuring modern amenities such as charging points, air conditioning, and automatic exit stairs at all doors.

These features will facilitate easier boarding and alighting for passengers, particularly for the 50,000 wheelchair users and those traveling with pushchairs, luggage, or bicycles.

These metro coaches are specifically designed for metropolitan networks with frequent stops and relatively short journeys. Besides the 46 metro cars for Nexus, Stadler is also supplying 53 metro cars for the Liverpool City Region and 17 for the Glasgow Subway. Globally, Stadler has sold 840 units. Testing on the Tyne and Wear network began last year and involves a rigorous and exhaustive process.
