The Liget Budapest Project has won the award for the world’s best urban development at the FIABCI international real estate development competition in Lagos, Nigeria, announced Benedek Gyorgyevics, CEO of Városliget Zrt. With this, the comprehensive renewal of Városliget (City Park), Europe’s largest cultural urban development project, has won one of the world’s most prestigious professional awards, Turizmus.com reports.
The jury of the Paris-based International Real Estate Federation (FIABCI) selected the concept of Liget Budapest as the best in the world based on the complexity, sustainability, and urban architectural significance of the project – the “Master Plan,” along which the historically significant renewal of Városliget is continuously being implemented. In its justification for the “World Gold Winner” award in the “Master Plan” category, the jury highlighted the aesthetic values of the development, its environmentally conscious approach, and the exceptional visitor experience, thanks to which Liget has become a global model of contemporary urban development.
“It is a great honor that the comprehensive concept of the Liget Budapest Project, which has seen the renovation of our century-old cultural institutions and the construction of some of the world’s most exciting contemporary buildings alongside the rehabilitation of the park’s green spaces, has been placed at the top of its category by the international jury,” said Benedek Gyorgyevics, CEO of Városliget Zrt., the company responsible for implementing the project. He added:
The FIABCI award confirms that Budapest’s number one family adventure park, with its impressive House of Music Hungary and the Museum of Ethnography, has a place among the world’s best tourist destinations.”
The Liget Budapest Project has become Europe’s largest cultural urban development project, recognized with more than fifty domestic and international awards. Beyond the first decade of City Park’s renewal, the new developments have already been visited by more than twelve million people, the announcement highlighted.

As a result of the park renovations, the City Park Playground, the City Park Sports Center, the dog adventure parks, and the reborn Mihály Mőcsényi Botanical Garden have become hugely popular. The new and renovated cultural institutions implemented in the project have become new landmarks in Hungary, with the House of Music Hungary, the Museum of Ethnography, the reimagined Museum of Fine Arts, and the Millennium House regularly featured in international tourist guides, while operating at full capacity. In addition to all this, the green areas of the City Park have been fundamentally renovated and expanded with significant new areas. During the park developments, over 270,000 m² of green space has been renewed, while the process of making City Park car-free has also begun.
