Life-Size Statue of Diva and Actress Zsa Zsa Gábor to Be Erected in Budapest

Hungary Today 2024.01.26.

Icon and actress Zsa Zsa Gabor (born Sári Gábor), who died aged 99, will receive a life-size statue in Budapest. She had a huge career in the United States, winning a Golden Globe Award and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, reports Világgazdaság.

A life-size statue of Zsa Zsa Gabor will soon be erected. The announcement was made at a press conference following the completion of a statue of the Hungarian-born film diva that will be erected in Mechwart Grove in the second district. The artwork will be unveiled in a Budapest gallery on Zsa Zsa Gabor’s birthday on February 6, the Hungarian tabloid, Blikk, wrote.

The press event was attended by the diva’s late husband, Frédéric Prinz von Anhalt.

The life-size statue is known to be the work of János Babusa.

“I am a bit embarrassed, I have never done anything like what I am doing today. I am grateful to everyone who helped me to create this statue, to make this project a reality. Let us not forget Hungary itself, which has always stood behind Zsa Zsa Gabor. I have been here many times over the years. Many people have contacted me saying that they have seen Zsa Zsa’s films and remember her.

Many people have asked me before why there is not a Zsa Zsa Gabor Museum or a statue? I thought about it a lot and I thought that if we could come up with an idea, I would work on it.

After all, I oversee the Zsa Zsa Gabor Foundation in America, and all the money that goes into it, I thought: why not use it for this noble purpose?”

The Hungarian-born actress died at the age of 99 in Los Angeles in 2016, following a sudden cardiac arrest. Her husband wanted to bury her in Hungary, but she was finally laid to rest in the Pierce Brothers Westwood Village Memorial Park & Mortuary Cemetery in Los Angeles. Some of her ashes were laid to rest in 2021, in Budapest, in the Fiume Road Graveyard.

Gabor competed in the 1933 Miss Hungary pageant, where she placed as second runner-up, and began her stage career in Vienna the following year. Outside of her acting career, Gabor was known for her extravagant Hollywood lifestyle, glamorous personality, and her many marriages. In total, Gabor had nine husbands. She once stated, “Men have always liked me and I have always liked men. But I like a mannish man, a man who knows how to talk to and treat a woman—not just a man with muscles.”
